Baroness Onora O’Neill
Master Newnham College in Cambridge
“I was struck by the great subtlety of tone and texture she achieved with the complex of drawing”
Beka Smith’s Drawing and Portrait Artistry

A portrait drawing created using pencils – graphite and shading – lends itself beautifully to a wide range of subjects. In particular, pencil portrait drawings capture subtle tonal shifts with precision, allowing depth and definition to emerge naturally. Although the medium appears simple, creating a strong likeness through pencil drawing requires a high level of skill, control, and sensitivity to detail.
Beka has always held pencil art (graphite) in the highest esteem and, as a result, many of her favourite works are portrait drawings. Her portfolio includes two pencil portrait drawings of Baroness Onora O’Neill, commissioned for two separate institutions where the Baroness has played a prominent role. Specifically, these commissions were created for Newnham College, Cambridge, and the British Academy in London. In addition, Beka completed a pencil portrait drawing of Dr Leslie Wayper, Fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, which remains part of the University’s collection.
Portrait Drawing Commissions & Subject Suitability
Alongside institutional commissions, Beka has completed numerous portrait drawing commissions for private collections. One such example is her well-known portrait drawing Baby in the Bathtub. Graphite proves particularly effective for baby and child portrait drawings and, similarly, works exceptionally well for certain types of pet and animal portraiture. In many cases, pencil brings out depth and texture in a way that paint can struggle to express. Examples of Beka’s animal portrait drawings can be viewed in the gallery.
When it comes to commissioning, the process for a portrait drawing is straightforward and collaborative. Typically, portrait drawings are created from photographs supplied by the client. This approach works especially well for children, as it preserves a specific moment in time long after it has passed. Therefore, if you have an image that captures the spirit or likeness of your subject, Beka can transform it into a detailed and expressive pencil portrait drawing. To begin, you are welcome to get in touch to discuss your requirements.
Alternatively, for clients seeking a more bespoke service, Beka can arrange site visits to take reference photographs herself. While this approach is more commonly requested for portrait painting commissions rather than portrait drawings, it may be suitable for certain projects. In any case, if you have questions about your portraiture project or would like guidance on the best approach, Beka is happy to advise.
